FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How does a faceted cut change the opal's play-of-color?

Smooth round beads provide a continuous, curved surface that displays broad, uninterrupted sweeps of the opal's fire. Faceted beads feature geometric flat planes cut across the surface. These facets act like individual mirrors, catching light from multiple angles simultaneously. This breaks up the traditional directional flash into a more scattered, glittering effect.

Does the faceted cut affect the 6mm size or stringing profile?

The peak-to-peak measurement remains a true 6mm, meaning these string exactly like standard smooth rounds. The core hole alignment and resting profile on wire or thread are identical. The difference is purely textural and visual. The flat facets slightly reduce the overall mass of the bead, providing a distinct tactile feel and a more complex profile when strung in sequence.

Are the beads uniform in size?

Yes. Beads are precision cut and polished for consistent sizing. Minor tolerance (±0.1mm typical) can occur due to polishing, but they are manufactured for repeatability and batch consistency.

Will the color look exactly like the photos?

Opal appearance changes with lighting and viewing angle. Under point light, flash appears stronger and more directional. Under diffuse light, color appears softer and more even.

Photos and videos show typical presentation, but slight variation in pattern and flash is normal.

Can these be used for permanent jewelry?

Yes. Astral Opal™ & Nebula Opal™ beads are well suited for permanent jewelry applications when properly mounted. Avoid direct torch exposure and extreme heat.

Will the beads fade or lose color over time?

No. Both Astral Opal™ and Nebula Opal™ are color-stable under normal wear conditions. They do not contain water like natural opal and will not dehydrate or craze.

Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh solvents or direct flame.

Can I use ultrasonic cleaners or acetone?

Ultrasonic cleaners and aggressive solvents are not recommended. Clean gently with mild soap and water. Avoid acetone and strong chemical exposure.

Why choose lab-grown over natural opal?

Lab-grown opals provide:

  • Consistent sizing and supply
  • Stable structure (no dehydration risk)
  • Lower cost per comparable visual impact
  • Predictable performance in jewelry applications

Natural opal can be beautiful, but is more variable and higher risk for daily wear.
